You can't please them all
Here's a marketing lesson you need to listen to carefully…
You will NEVER make everyone happy and that's a GOOD THING.
The more you can polarize the crowd, the more loyal your followers are and the more money you will make.
BUT, many people get caught up in the negatity spewed from the idiots that don't like you and as a result, change the way they are doing things.
There will always be depressed, unhappy, and jaded people in this world that feel the need to voice themselves. They think they are smarter than you and will do what they can to prove it. Just realize that they are idiots and as such, treat them like idiots.
Send messages to your list with the rants and statements sent to you by these jerks. By doing this and keeping the moral highground in your response, you will even FURTHER segregate your list.
At this point, even those that dislike you will be better buyers as they will feel the need to know everything you are doing. Often, they will buy and refund.
When this happens, call them out by name in emails you send to your list.
This will create buzz… and as our buddy Dean Hunt is aware, buzz can be fun.

PS - This post is the result of a conversation I had with a very nice lady this past weekend. She was letting the negativity get her down to the point where she wanted to quit.
Never say die…

Woody,
I presume this post was inspired partly on my recent post: http://deanhunt.com/back-to-reality-with-a-bang/
So yes, of course I agree 100% with you.
My motto is this: The worst response you can get is no response.
I would rather have people call me an idiot than ignore me. Trust me, if you are ignored, you will not succeed on the Internet!
Dean
I have not read that post, but it does ring true
Woody
What a weird coincidence. Great minds think alike
hehe
For those of you wondering what I am talking about… a lady tried to call the cops on me because I emailed her a reply when she OPTED-IN to my newsletter.
Like Woody says, "you will never make everyone happy."
Dean
Right on the money, Woodrow!
When clowns start bashing you in personal emails, in your blog comments, in online forums, and so forth, you should REJOICE with a huge smile on your face because that person just gave you a marketing weapon to add to your arsenal.
You simply paste their email to you into a new email you send out to your list (as well as in a new blog post), basically telling your people to listen to what this clown has to say, and more importantly… you can tell the people on your list to go to your blog and leave THEIR responses to what that person had to say (or at least have them email you their comments). Don't even go through the effort of defending yourself. Let others do it for you.
Oh… and although I'm not sure it would be a great idea to use their full name when you call them out (only first name or initials, maybe), what is REALLY effective is to make up a name for them that really makes them look like a clown. Something like "Lou Zer" (Loser). Get it?
Then, what you do is take a big collection of those comments and turn around and send the best ones to your list, basically saying something like… "Wow, you won't believe the reaction I got by sending out my last email to you. Look what these people had to say".
Before you know it, you'll have a very powerful force working for you… SOCIAL PROOF. When one person bashes you, but several others "come to your rescue", you'll not only feel empowered like never before, but you'll also be able to confirm your spot in the marketplace as a marketer who truly does have your prospects' and customers' best interests at heart.
Too many people get caught up in letting a few negative comments ruin their day, when in reality, you'll never please all of the people all of the time. Most importantly, you need to remember that if your heart and soul is completely behind what you're offering in the way of products and services, you should feel at peace with what you are doing for those who really care about your stuff.
THOSE people are the only ones who should really matter to you, and the only ones you should invest your time and energy in. All the others, you just smile, think to yourself how much you truly do care for people enough to go out of your way to help them, and then use any negative comments to further your marketing efforts, while making a commitment to yourself to never allow negative comments to bring you down ever again, but to enhance your marketing, instead!
Take care,
Andy Hussong
I recently decided to give away a FREE unique article submission program. But, I sold a course on the backend on installing it and getting the most out of it. Doing so was a 'dirty trick' according to some people. And someone else didn't like that it was free - they wanted to pay for it.
You cannot get caught up in what some others think about you. (If a majority are doing the same… it might not be the rest of the world, it just may be you. But most of the time it's going to be them.)
Hey Woody!
Thanks for shining some light in this vein.
There are a ton of folks out there that are
unconsciously subdued by "other-than-righteous" comments to their sites.
It gets them down before it is realized.
Takes the starch out of their drawers, so to speak.
As Andy Hussong just stated, "rejoice" …then KNOW you are doing what is best in your own world at that time.
There's always gonna be someone out there who thinks they know more than you.
Who really cares?
Just keep growing and learning…and don't let anything, or especially anyone get you down.
Like I say…" If you ain't sleeping with me, or helping me pay the bills,or teaching me, or one of my students…then Get Stuffed!"
In some of my most "emotive" markets I actually use the negative feedback emails in my autoresponder.
I write an answer and feed the conversation into the marketing sequence.
Great post Woody
What a great post. The more prevalant you become it seems that more of the nuts come out of the woodwork. I agree that getting this information is good and responding to it but let's all realize that people act just like crabs in a tub!
When you try to do something better (crawl out from your current situation) the others try to grab you and pull you back down.
Onward and upward!

Hey Woody, what's the status of your intern program's automated delivery system? you should ask J. Brausch directly how he accomplished that.
Also, when are you going to start the referral system for the intern program?
